FAQ
Generally no, but sometimes yes. In Victoria, a handyman does not to be licenced for work under $10,000 and the work does not involve plumbing or electrical work. In Victoria, any work valued at above $10,000 needs to be done by a someone registered by the VBA (Victorian Building Authority) for the work they are doing. Yes. Doncaster Handyman is insured for Business Liability up to $20M. Always ensure that your handyman or any tradesman is adequately insured. Even though the handyman may have the best intentions and do great work, mistakes can be made which could be very costly.
In Victoria, a handyman can only perform minor plumbing work such as replacing a tap washer. A handyman is not permitted to perform any electrical work.
This is a bit of a misconception as the work and service a handyman provides can be underrated. Handymen carry tools for pretty much all trades. Carpentry, Painting, Plastering, Rendering, Bricklaying, Glazing etc. A handyman could come to your house and in one visit, patch a hole in your wall and paint it, fix a door that won’t close, install a new rangehood and replace a tap washer. You would normally need three or four separate tradesmen to come to do all those jobs. Apart from the inconvenience of trying to coordinate them all to come at a time that suits, it would also be much more expensive paying each one individually. Furthermore, most tradesmen are looking for the larger jobs that they can spend a few days on rather than small jobs, as such, they charge accordingly to deter people hiring them for the small jobs.
If you’re looking to get value out of your handyman, have a think about what else they can do while they are there and most likely, they will be able to do it for you, just be sure to let them know beforehand so they can allocate the time, as if they have other jobs booked after yours, they may not be able to stay back.
Every job is different, so it’s impossible to answer this question as such. At Doncaster Handyman, we give fixed prices upfront so you know exactly how much a job will cost before we start. There are some situations where you really don’t know how much work will be involved until the problem is exposed such as rotting timber inside walls. In this situation, we would expose the problem, then provide a quote from there which still gives you an opportunity to to assess your options.
Be weary of hiring anyone at an hourly rate. If a handyman or tradesman is offering this, it could be because the job is too complex for them and they honestly don’t know how long it will take. In this case, you should probably spend more time finding someone who has the experience to better understand the problem and subsequently solve it more efficiently.
Other scenarios where price may be variable is where you may be renovating your bathroom or kitchen and the tradesman allows a certain amount for tapware or tiles, and you will pay any difference between their allocation and what you want to buy. eg. If they allocate $500 for tiles, but you like tiles that will cost $600, then you will pay the extra $100.
